Carolyn Kroll Reidy became President and CEO of Simon & Schuster in January 2008. She is responsible for the publishing and business activities of all divisions of the company, which include the Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group, Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, Simon & Schuster Audio, Simon & Schuster Digital, and international companies in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
Prior to being named CEO, Ms. Reidy had been president of Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Division since January 2001. Under her direction the division made numerous strategic moves, adding to its stable of imprints numerous lines that insure it publishes to every segment of the marketplace. These publishing initiatives include the launch of Threshold Editions, which publishes books for the conservative reader; Strebor Books, focusing on the African American marketplace; the acquisition of Howard Books, a Christian publishing company; Beyond Words, which publishes works of spiritual and new age appeal; and a Hispanic/Latino line in the Atria imprint.
Under Ms. Reidy's supervision, Simon & Schuster has published some of the most distinguished authors in the world. The list includes Pulitzer Prize winners like David McCullough (1776, John Adams) and Doris Kearns Goodwin (Team of Rivals), acclaimed journalists and newsmakers including Bob Woodward (Bush at War), world figures such as President Jimmy Carter (Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (Living History) and memoirists Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes) and Jeannette Walls (The Glass Castle). The Adult Group publishes many of the biggest and bestselling names in popular fiction, many of whom have had long lasting relationships with Simon & Schuster, including Sandra Brown, Mary Higgins Clark, Vince Flynn, Philippa Gregory, Stephen King, Jodi Picoult, and Jennifer Weiner. The company has a stellar reputation as a publisher of practical advice from authors as varied as Dr. Phil McGraw (Self Matters), Bob Greene (The Best Life Diet), Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz (YOU: On a Diet), Paula Deen (It Ain't All About the Cookin'), and Stephen R. Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People), and for publishing franchises such as The Joy of Cooking, which in 2006 was reissued in a special 75th Anniversary edition. In 2007 Rhonda Byrne's The Secret became the fastest selling hardcover in the history of Simon & Schuster, with more than 6 million copies in print worldwide.
Ms. Reidy was named President and Publisher of the Simon & Schuster Trade Division in 1992. She came to Simon & Schuster from Avon Books, where she had been president and publisher since 1988. She began her publishing career at Random House in 1976 and moved to William Morrow as subsidiary rights director in 1983. She returned to Random House in 1986, ultimately serving concurrently as publisher of Vintage Books and associate publisher of the Random House trade imprint.
Ms. Reidy was named one of "The 50 Women to Watch" by the Wall Street Journal in 2007, and has also been cited as "100 Most Powerful People in Entertainment" by Entertainment Weekly. She is on the Boards of Directors of the Association of American Publishers, the National Book Foundation, and Literacy Partners Inc. In 2003, Ms. Reidy was the recipient of the Matrix Award from the New York Women in Communications.
Ms. Reidy was born in Washington D.C. on May 2, 1949. She graduated from Middlebury College in 1971, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Russian. She earned her M.A. in 1974 and Ph.D. in 1982 in English from Indiana University. She lives in New York with her husband.
