SIMON & SCHUSTER PAPER POLICY

Simon & Schuster, Inc., and its employees are committed to publishing in a manner that both respects the environment and helps to preserve the world’s great forest regions for the use and pleasure of future generations. We seek to achieve this through the judicious use of natural resources, most specifically in the production, manufacture, and distribution of our books, and by working with paper manufacturers who are certified as practitioners of sustainable forest management techniques that address and balance social, environmental and economic concerns.

With those concerns foremost, as of November 7, 2007, Simon & Schuster will implement a paper procurement and environmental policy with the following specific goals:

  1. For books printed and bound in the United States, Simon & Schuster will endeavor to eliminate the use of paper that may contain fiber from endangered and old-growth forest areas.

  2. Simon & Schuster will give purchasing preference to and seek to maximize the use of recycled fiber in its products. To that end, Simon & Schuster has set a goal to incrementally increase the use of recycled fiber from its current 10% baseline level to a 25% or greater aggregate level by 2012.

  3. Simon & Schuster endorses careful and responsible harvesting of forests, and all of the mills from which Simon & Schuster purchases paper are certified to standards of sustainable forestry according to widely recognized forestry management standards. S&S will endeavor to have at least 10% of its paper Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified by 2012, where economically practical and subject to its availability and Simon & Schuster’s product mix.

  4. By the end of 2007 and going forward, all Simon & Schuster shipping cartons will be made exclusively from 100% recycled post-consumer waste, subject to availability. Cartons supplied by our manufacturers are made from a significant percentage of recycled fiber.

  5. Simon & Schuster will communicate these goals and standards to its suppliers and manufacturers as part of the negotiation and contract process. S&S will encourage vendors to align themselves with our goals by developing new grades or increasing recycled fiber content in existing grades to support us in achieving our stated benchmarks.

  6. Simon & Schuster continually endeavors and will continue to reduce waste and the use of natural resources through other available means. These include the careful management of print runs, the increased use of digital means for the production and distribution of content for consumers and in the S&S workplace, and eco-friendly practices in its publishing offices and distribution facilities.

  7. In an effort to successfully implement the above-stated goals, S&S will work with key stakeholders on an ongoing basis, will continually monitor and track our progress toward accomplishing these and other objectives, and will regularly review this policy to address changes in the marketplace and business environment.
