Jan. 5 — Irish writer Colm Tóibin won the Costa Novel Award for Brooklyn. Judges said: "Poised, quiet and incrementally shattering—we all loved this book and can't praise it highly enough."

Frank McCourt, 78, Author of Angela's Ashes

July 19 — Frank McCourt, the former New York City schoolteacher whose book about his childhood in Ireland won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, passed away today.
