About The Author

Ine De Volder (Belgium) is a creative jack-of-all-trades. In addition to her work as a kindergarten teacher and author, she is constantly looking for new ways to realize her dreams and ideas. In the past, Ine participated in a magazine for toddlers, wrote children's poetry, and made a number of educational editions for schools.

About The Illustrator

Evie Mariek Meij (2004) is a self-taught illustrator with a great love for nature. She moved to a small village in the north of the Netherlands at a young age, in an area full of woods and lakes. During her childhood, she camped once a year on the island of Vlieland with her parents and sister, where her love for nature began.

During high school, Evie's interest in drawing and painting grew, especially during art classes. In December 2018, she released her first nature-inspired illustrations, which were very well received by the public. After high school, she trained as a visual arts and design teacher, enabling her to pass on her passion for illustration to others through courses and other educational activities.

In the spring of 2024, Evie debuted as a picture book illustrator with Animals and Their Toilet Rituals (Clavis Publishing).

Raves and Reviews

Welcome to wild nature’s poop parade. Published in Belgium and the Netherlands and translated from Dutch, this work details some of the many ways animals make and make use of their excretions. Capped by Meij’s labeled display of representative pellets and piles, dozens of naturalistically rendered creatures pose with their splatters or splashes next to De Volder’s sometimes giddy commentary. The animals are grouped by habitat and practice—for instance, marine wildlife with “strange toilet rituals” or forest dwellers that use their waste to send a message to others. The author repeatedly notes that poop spreads and nourishes plant life and that some animals use droppings for food or defense as well as waste elimination—facts that may be familiar to animal lovers. But even budding scatologists may be gobsmacked to learn that kestrels can spot the ultraviolet emanations in mouse urine from above, that coral snakes can produce startling “bang farts” when threatened, or that lobsters entice prospective mates with aromatic “love pee.” Creatures aren’t always drawn to scale; still, there are nuggets aplenty of solid biology for readers attracted by the crowd-pleasing topic. An informative and entertaining info-dump.
