Chapter 1 UGGY-MUGGY!

  “I’m ROASTING!” said Henry Heckelbeck.

  “I’m BROILING!” said Dudley Day.

“Well, I’m BROASTING!” said Max Maplethorpe.

  “What’s that?” asked Henry.

“It’s a mix of roasting AND broiling,” said Max. “Because today is the HOTTEST day in Brewster’s history! My aunt said so, and she’s a weather reporter on TV!”

Max picked up a pine cone from the floor of Dudley’s tree house and pretended it was a microphone.

“Let’s stay INSIDE today, Brewster!” she warned. “The weather is UGGY-MUGGY! With a one hundred percent chance of hot, sizzly, sweaty GROSSNESS.”

  The boys laughed.

“Maybe this will help,” Dudley said.

Then he reached for a bottle of lemonade he had brought from the kitchen. “Who wants some?”

Henry and Max held out their cups, and Dudley filled them. All three friends raised their glasses and made toasts to things that were cold.

  “To ice cubes!” said Henry.

  “To snowflakes!” said Max.

“To Popsicles!” said Dudley. “And ice-cold lemonade!”

  Then they sipped their drinks.

  “EEEEEW!” cried Max. “It’s WARM!”

Henry wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “And watery!”

“Sorry, dudes. How are we going to beat the heat now?” Dudley asked. “I say we head to the North Pole. We can hang out with the penguins!”

Max rolled her eyes. “The only problem is, penguins live at the SOUTH Pole.”

Dudley shrugged. “Then we’ll go THERE.”

“It would be cool to slide on the ice with penguins!” Max said as she fanned herself with her spy notebook.

“Since the South Pole is SO far away, I have a better idea,” said Henry.

Dudley sat up. “Is it a cold idea?”

Henry smiled. “Cold AND wet!” he said. “The new town pool just opened! It may not have penguins, but it has a waterslide and a spray park.”

Max dropped to her knees. “Oh, please! Take us to the SPLASH!”

The boys burst into laughter. Then the three friends climbed down the ladder and raced across the lawn to Dudley’s house.

“TAKE US TO THE SPLASH!” they chanted all the way into the house.
