About The Book

Based in one of the world’s oldest wisdom traditions, How Grief Becomes Light is a guide for anyone seeking spiritual support, guidance, and comfort as they navigate loss.

How Grief Becomes Light: Navigating Loss and the Afterlife with Newari Hindu Rituals is both a deeply personal story and a practical companion for anyone walking the path of loss.

When Suren Shestha’s beloved father passed away, he and his family returned to Nepal to honor him through the sacred traditions of their Newar heritage. What began as an intimate farewell became a transformative journey—one that revealed how ritual and remembrance can carry us through grief into healing.

In this compassionate guide, Suren and Ruby Shrestha weave moving narrative with timeless practices from Hindu and Vedic traditions. After each chapter, readers will find gentle, accessible rituals and reflections, including:

• Cherishing final moments and saying goodbye to the body

• Day-by-day guidance for the first weeks of mourning

• Practices to support the soul’s journey after death

• Ways to honor ancestors and plant seeds of remembrance

• Embracing the wisdom of elders, family, and community

• Preparing for one’s own death with grace and courage

With warmth, humor, and spiritual insight, How Grief Becomes Light offers a way to honor loved ones, tend to our own grief, and see loss as part of a larger continuum of love and life.

Whether you are mourning, supporting someone who is grieving, or seeking to understand the mysteries of life and death more deeply, this book is a comforting and inspiring companion.
