A youngster is pals with a lion. 

Lulu, a pale-skinned child with straight dark hair, speaks directly to a rotund yellow lion about their relationship. “I knew we’d be best friends from the first moment I first saw you.” As the young protagonist describes their bond, readers join them on their adventures—romping on the playground, pretending with cardboard boxes, and even getting into trouble (sometimes). When Lulu is bullied by some mean kids, the lion comes to the rescue. And when they play hide-and-seek, it’s always a pleasure to find each other. But their relationship isn’t perfect. Sometimes Lulu and the lion get angry at each other, like when they “fight over who gets to wear the pretty scarf” or when the lion eats all the cookies. But when you’re best friends, a hug can make everything all better—something both of them well know. Mao's bright, lighthearted vignettes use wiggly, loose strokes to convey ease and vivaciousness. Though this tale, originally published in Belgium and the Netherlands and translated from Dutch, treads familiar ground, Lulu and the lion are nonetheless adorable characters who deftly convey the ups and downs of friendship.
