Bob Woodward's Memoir, SECRETS, to Be Published by Simon & Schuster in September
NEW YORK, NY, March 24, 2026—Simon & Schuster announced today that it will publish Secrets: A Reporter’s Memoir by Bob Woodward on September 29, 2026.
Woodward is an associate editor at The Washington Post, where he has worked for 55 years. He has shared in two Pulitzer Prizes, one for his Watergate coverage with Carl Bernstein and the other as the Post’s lead reporter for coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He has authored 24 bestselling books with Simon & Schuster, 16 of which have been #1 New York Times bestsellers. His first was All The President’s Men in 1974 and the most recent was War in 2025.
THE WOODWARD FILES ARE REAL...AND REVELATORY. Bob Woodward has reported on every major American leader, from Richard Nixon to Donald Trump. He has kept notes, transcripts and files of all his interviews with the most important players in Washington. One of the enduring mysteries is how he gets so far inside presidential decision-making? For the first time in this one-of-a-kind reporting memoir, Woodward lifts the lid on his historic reporting relationships, some spanning several decades. This is the rare memoir that will break news. It is a return to Woodward’s own reporting story that captivated the world in All the President’s Men. But this book takes readers far beyond Watergate to the full reporting life of a man regarded as among the best journalists of our time.
THE BESTSELLING NONFICTION JOURNALIST OF OUR TIME. Simon & Schuster has published 24 books either written or co-written by Woodward. Time and again Woodward has penetrated government administrations to bring the public inside the room. Few journalists have had greater national impact, and there is no Simon & Schuster author whose books have made more news. Like never before, in this memoir, Woodward offers his personal views on everything as he saw it at the time, preserved in his detailed notes, and his reflections now at age 83.
HISTORY AS IT HAPPENED. Secrets covers it all, from the Vietnam War to Watergate to 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq; from the machinations of the Supreme Court to the secret operations of the CIA; from the economic turmoil of the Clinton and Obama years to the dysfunction of the Trump years. No one is better at chronicling the use of presidential power and its impact on the world.
HOW HE DID IT. For years, reporters have been fascinated by the subject of how Woodward has broken so many stories. For the first time, Woodward describes in vivid detail his reporting methods in the newsroom and book writing. How does he get people to talk? Why do people talk? Why do some sources continue to talk for decades? This book will be assigned reading in journalism courses. As always, Bob's work will be the subject of national media coverage. As Robert Gates, the former Defense Secretary and CIA Director put it, “He has an extraordinary ability to get otherwise responsible adults to spill [their] guts.”
In 2020, The New York Times said of Woodward, “The scope and depth of his work have earned him a unique place in politics and journalism as perhaps the most enduring chronicler of American presidents. At either end of his long bibliography are two of the most divisive American presidents in generations: Richard Nixon and (Donald) Trump.”
“This memoir is monumental and magnificent,” said Jonathan Karp, who acquired and edited the book for Simon & Schuster. “It may be Bob Woodward’s greatest achievement as an author. No reporter has had a greater impact covering our national story. Secrets puts the past 55 years into context in a fascinating and revelatory way.”
Jonathan Karp acquired world rights and audiobook rights from the late Robert Barnett of Williams & Connelly.
