Simon & Schuster Announces Chrystia Freeland’s New Book, Unreliable Boyfriend

A candid insider’s account of global power, diplomacy, and America’s uncertain role in the world from Canada’s former Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Finance Minister

NEW YORK, NY, June 10, 2026—Simon & Schuster announced today that Simon Six, Simon & Schuster Canada, and Simon & Schuster UK will publish Unreliable Boyfriend: An Insider’s View of Dealing with a Chaotic Superpower, Plutocrats, and Other Complicated People by Chrystia Freeland on October 13, 2026.

In this deeply personal and sharply observed book, Freeland draws on her extraordinary career as both an award-winning journalist and one of Canada’s most influential political leaders to examine America’s shifting role on the global stage. With firsthand experience negotiating with world leaders in Washington, Brussels, Berlin, and Beijing, Freeland offers a revealing account of power, diplomacy, trade, populism, and the challenges facing democracies today.

Before entering politics, Freeland was internationally recognized for her work as a journalist and editor at the Financial Times and Reuters, as well as for her acclaimed books Sale of the Century and Plutocrats. During more than a decade in Canadian politics, she served as Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Minister of Finance, and played a central role in negotiating the USMCA trade agreement.

Unreliable Boyfriend combines political memoir, international analysis, and reportage to explore what happens when policies fail to deliver for working people, how alliances are forged and fractured, and how the United States appears through the eyes of one of its closest allies.

Jonathan Karp, publisher of Simon Six and editor of the book, said: “I’ve been hoping for ten years that Chrystia Freeland would write this book, because it’s a story only she could tell. Many journalists have gotten close to power, but few have exercised power, seen how it works from the inside, and gained the perspective to tell us how that power can be used more wisely in the future. That’s why this book is so important.”

Freeland said: “This is a book about power, democracy, and the choices countries make when the old rules no longer seem to apply. As a Canadian negotiating with the United States during years of extraordinary political turbulence, I had a front-row seat to historic change. I wanted to tell the story of what I saw—and what it means for the future.”

Freeland will assume her new role in July 2026 as Warden of Rhodes House and CEO of the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, where she will oversee one of the world’s most prestigious scholarship programs.

Unreliable Boyfriend will be published in hardcover, ebook, and audio formats internationally by Simon Six, Simon & Schuster Canada, and Simon & Schuster UK on October 13, 2026. Jonathan Karp acquired the book from Andrew Wylie of The Wylie Agency.

About the Author
Chrystia Freeland served as Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Minister of Finance of Canada. A Rhodes Scholar with a background in Russian history, she first gained international acclaim as a foreign correspondent and editor for the Financial Times and Reuters. Her first book, Sale of the Century (2000), chronicled the struggle between reformers and oligarchs in 1990’s Russia. Her bestselling 2012 book, Plutocrats, established her as a leading voice on global economic inequality. After more than a decade in federal politics, including a pivotal role in negotiating the USMCA, Freeland resigned from Parliament in early 2026. She has since served as a Resident Fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and as an unpaid economic adviser to the Ukrainian government. In July 2026, she will assume her new role as the Warden of Rhodes House and CEO of the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, where she will oversee one of the world’s most prestigious scholarship programs.
