About The Author

Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) was an artist and writer, renowned for the illustrations she drew for children's books. She studied art at a number of London academies including the Slade School of Fine Art. She initially produced designs for the greetings card market, drawing cards for various occasions. When in 1879 wood-block engraver and printer Edmund Evans printed Under the Window, an instant best-seller, her reputation was established and the collaboration continued throughout the 1880s and 1890s. She died aged only 55 in 1901. The Kate Greenaway Medal, established in her honour in 1955, is awarded annually by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in the UK to an illustrator of children's books.
